At ARKEN you can experience modern art, contemporary art and striking architecture which alone merits a visit.

In the shop IPods can be borrowed to hear about the art. The view of Køge Bay can be enjoyed from the café and exclusive Danish design can be purchased in the shop.

ARKEN Museum of Modern Art was opened on 15 March 1996 by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe.

The experience inside the museum is totally different from what visitors see outside. From an outer landscape the visitors walked into an inner landscape which, with its slanted angles, high-ceilinged rooms, metal stairs and smooth walls, resembled a ferry or a large cruise ship where many functions were collected under one roof: gallery space, café, shop etc.

ARKEN has undergone two extensions in 2008 and 2009.

ARKEN's collection comprises more than 300 works of art. The main part of them can be seen in ARKEN's permanent exhibition ARKEN's COLLECTION.

ARKEN collects Danish, Nordic and international art with special emphasis on contemporary art, works from 1990 onwards.
